Sixteen area high school basketball programs received a late Christmas gift Friday at the Dothan Civic Center as checks from the proceeds of the Downtown Dothan Hoops Classic were distributed.

15-year tournament record $62,624 was raised through sponsorships, ticket sales and concession revenue less expenses to return to schools selected to participate in the men’s basketball tournament held each year.

The four teams that advanced to the semifinals and championship/consolation round – tournament champion Eufaula, runner-up Dothan, Headland and Geneva County – each pocketed $7,828.

Four teams advanced to the quarter-finals before being eliminated – Ashford, Houston Academy, Providence Christian and Wicksburg – each earned $3,914.

The eight eliminated in the first round – Abbeville, Barbour County, Dale County, Daleville, Geneva, Georgiana, Northside Methodist Academy and Rehobeth – took home $1,957.

“To all these sponsors, it’s very much appreciated,” Dothan coach Janasky Fleming said. “At the end of the day, we are able to provide uniforms, food for trips, buses and all that – it costs quite a bit.

“When you started seeing $75 per official, per game, and you’re talking about three officials and a timekeeper, what sponsors are doing is just amazing. I am proud that our city offers this to everyone, because it is a ritual.
