George Floyd died on May 25, 2020, after former Minneapolis cop Derek Chauvin knelt on his neck for more than nine minutes. Floyd repeatedly said he couldn’t breathe. Chauvin has been convicted of murder and is awaiting conviction.
“I am grateful for the verdict, but we still lost a father, an American, we are here to remind us,” said Antonio Lopez, member of the East Palo Alto city council.
Others say they came to this vigil, outraged by the hatred and violence against the Asian community.
“Racial justice is for my parents, my elders and of course our children,” said Sandy Chen of Los Altos.
Many say ending racial hatred and injustice seems impossible, but some religious leaders believe they have a place to start.
“Having intercultural relationships, getting to know people from different backgrounds, opening our hearts to each other is all part of the solution,” said Pastor Van Riesen.
