Sonjia McHone Obituary (1942 – 2022) – Concord, NC

Mrs. Sonjia Barnhardt McHone, 79, of Concord, died Saturday, January 15, 2022 at Atrium Health University City.
A celebration of his life will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, January 23 with a funeral service at Central United Methodist Church Cemetery, 1119 Union St. S., Concord, presided over by the Reverend Jeff Insley. The family will receive friends after the service at the cemetery.
Sonjia was born on February 13, 1942 in Concord to the late Toledo Danner Barnhardt and Ruth Marshall Barnhardt. She was also predeceased by her son, Donald Beaver, Jr. and her husbands, Donald Beaver and Richard McHone.
Sonjia graduated from Winecoff High School in 1960. One of her greatest accomplishments was founding CVAN in 1984 where she served as immediate past president and board member, also acquiring and remodeling the first shelter for battered women. She owned the children’s clothing store BREMS in Concord, owned South Union Pharmacy in Concord and McHone Trucking Company in Salisbury. Sonjia was also a Life Master Bridge player and loved to travel.
Sonjia is survived by her daughter, Rozalyn Lehning and her husband, George of Concord; granddaughter, Sydni Andrews and husband, Blaine of Concord; great-grandchildren, Dylan and Clark Andrews; and former son-in-law, Tom Abernathy, Jr. of Concord.
Memorials can be made at Bethel United Methodist Church, 2380 Long Ferry Rd., Salisbury, NC 28146 or Center United Methodist Church.
