Team Uganda, Nigeria Global ICT Competition Winners

Ugandan and Nigerian teams have emerged as winners of the just-concluded Huawei Global ICT Competition.

The 2021-2022 ICT Competition Awards and Closing Ceremonies took place in Shenzhen, China on June 25, 2022 with 130 teams from 43 countries competing fiercely.

The Southern Africa region was a big hit in the year-long competition, which attracted 150,000 students from 85 countries around the world.

The Southern African team won two grand prizes, four first prizes and three second prizes.

Uganda was represented by nine students; six from the network track (Makerere University) and three from the cloud track (Muni University).

The grand prize was pocketed by Nigeria ABU and Nigeria University of Port Harcourt WHILE Nigeria ABU, Makerere University in Uganda (Team 1&2) and Kenyatta University in Kenya (Innovation Competition) won the top prize.

On the other hand, University of Dodoma in Tanzania, University of Ibadan in Nigeria, Ghana KNUST (Innovation Track & Woman in Tech Awards) won the second prize.

The third prize was won by KU Kenya, Machagos University, U Zimbabwe, KNUST Ghana, UOM Mauritius, MU Uganda and UDSM Tanzania.

The success of the competition highlighted the resilience of South African students in the global platform of competition.

In addition, the success of the competition has further improved the business environment. Presidents and ministries of various countries have praised Huawei for inspiring young Africans to learn ICT technologies, boosting their soil fertility, cultivating Huawei fans, and providing a strong brand following.

Huawei ICT Competition is a globally developed competitive ICT talent exchange program for university, college and TVET students. This aims to promote the healthy development of the ICT talent ecosystem and support the integration of industry and education.

Launched in the African region just six years ago, the competition has become the largest ICT skills competition in Africa and the world at large.

In May 2022, Huawei, the world’s leading ICT solutions provider, awarded the Seeds for the Future 2021 Finalists and Huawei ICT Regional Competition 2021-2022 Finalists.

Under the theme “Connection, Glory, Future”, the nine-month Huawei ICT competition for Sub-Saharan Africa was finalized on February 19, 2022 with more than 16 countries and 38 teams participating in the written exams and in laboratory. The competition attracted more than 15,000 participants from sub-Saharan Africa from 500 universities.

Globally, the Huawei ICT Competition 2021 covered over 83 countries around the world, with 150,000 participants from over 2,000 universities and colleges.

Huawei Uganda PR Manager, Mr. Gaojian said, “Huawei Uganda has approached more than 15 universities and interested them in the 2021 ICT competition. We have enrolled 750 students and opened our e-learning platforms for them. free in the various Network and cloud courses. The network track includes Datacom, Security, and Wireless Lan while the Cloud track includes Artificial Intelligence, Big Data, Cloud Computing, and Storage. These have been studied and have been submitted to the preliminary examinations, national examinations and regional examinations where we have reached the first and second position.

According to the company, Huawei has, over the past two decades, helped advance the ICT skills of more than 80,000 people in the Sub-Saharan Africa region. In doing so, he claims to have helped increase youth employability and close the gender gap in the ICT industry. Huawei itself is an employer of choice in the region. Its subsidiaries in 9 countries in sub-Saharan Africa obtained the Top Employer label in 2021.

With a series of talent ecosystem campaigns in Sub-Saharan Africa, including the ICT competition, Huawei hopes to train more than 700,000 ICT professionals by 2023.
