HALLANDALE BEACH (CBSMiami) As South Florida’s affordable housing crisis has deepened, cities, counties and activists have scrambled to find workable solutions. Now a faith-based initiative has entered the mix to bring relief.

On Thursday, Enterprise Community partners told a room full of church leaders that $1.5 million in grants from Wells Fargo were available to help them start the process.

The goal is to use available church assets to build new homes. It is estimated that there are over 1000 church lots available for use in Miami Dade, Broward and Monroe counties.

She would like to build affordable housing for seniors on the three acres of open space she owns on her church property.

“Would I like to see housing for people aged 50 and over. A condo with several full services,” she explained, would meet the needs of her congregation.

Miami-Dade has already partnered with churches to renovate apartments in Overtown and build a mid-rise apartment building in Liberty City.
